Why I Add Diatomaceous Earth to My Dog’s Food (And You Might Want To, Too)

Updated: Aug 3

.

If you’e like me, you believe that food is medicine — not just for us humans but for our four-legged companions too. After years of trial, research, and a whole lot of love, I found a surprising little helper that’s now a staple in Cyrus’s homemade meals: food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE).

DE is a fine white powder made from fossilized aquatic organisms. Sounds fancy, right? But when it’s food-grade (that’s important!), it’s totally safe for dogs — and super beneficial.

Top Benefits of DE for Dogs:

Natural Parasite Control

DE helps eliminate intestinal worms without chemicals. It’s like nature’s tiny armor against unwanted guests inside your dog’s body.

Detox and Digestive Support

Just a little sprinkled in food can gently cleanse the digestive system and support better nutrient absorption.

Stronger Coat & Healthier Skin

With minerals like silica, DE promotes a shinier coat, improved skin health, and even stronger nails.

Flea & Tick Support (Bonus!)

You can even use it topically as a natural flea powder. Just be careful not to let your dog inhale it.

How I Use It for Cyrus:

I start with 1/4 tsp per day mixed into his food, gradually increasing to 1 tsp for every 25 l lbs of body weight. Always with fresh water available!

Important Notes:

    • Only use food-grade DE — never the stuff for pools or industrial use.

    • Introduce it slowly to avoid digestive upset.

    • Check with your vet if your dog is on medication or has health conditions.

    Final Woof:

Adding DE to Cyrus’s meals has made a big difference in his energy, coat, and overall health. As always, do your research, talk to your vet, and trust your instincts. We’re all just doing our best for the furry ones we love.
